Eleven persons have reportedly lost their lives in an
auto crash that occurred at Uchi-Mbakor in Tarkaa Local Council of Benue
State.
Guardian reports that the accident involving a 16-seater Hiace bus and a Volkswagen car happened on Monday afternoon.
A witness said the 16-seater Hiace bus which summersaulted and went into flames, did not spare any life.
But the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Samson Audu, who confirmed the accident, said he could not ascertain the number of casualties, because the officials deployed to the scene were yet to send their reports.
Meanwhile, the state police command spokesman, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) John Bako, hinted that corpses recovered from the scene of the accident had been deposited at the Federal Medical Centre, Makurdi.
In a related development, another accident which occurred at Gidan-Bassa Village along the Lokoja-Ajaokuta Highway on Monday also left seven people dead while 13 others sustained serious injuries.
A witness, revealed that the accident occurred when a Toyota Hiace bus with registration number AKL 73 YP wrongfully overtake and rammed into a Corolla car with registration number AA 264 SNA killing the victims on the spot.
The Kogi State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Godwin Omiko, who confirmed the tragedy, said 20 persons were involved in the accident, adding that seven died on the spot and 13 others sustained injuries.
Omiko, said the dead comprised a male, four adult females and one female child, and that their corpses had been deposited at the Kogi Specialist, Zenith, ASCL and Ankuri hospitals’ morgues, adding that the injured ones are receiving treatment at the same hospital.
The sector commander blamed the crash on dangerous overtaking as well as drunkenness on the part of one of the drivers.
He said the victims belongings are in custody of the Ajaokuta Police Command. He appealed to road users to always obey traffic rules in order to stay alive.
Meanwhile, four members of the same family; a father, mother and their two kids were reportedly crushed to death by a truck filled with bags of rice Iwo-Ibadan Road in Osun State.
