A metre-long flesh parasite has been found living in a man’s foot at least for four years, Melbourne, Australia.
The 38-year-old man, from Sudan, visited doctors as his swollen foot
had been painful for nearly a year. The man’s foot was X-rayed and the
ghastly “guinea worm” was revealed.
The remains of the lengthy parasite were found in the back of his
ankle and the front of his sole. The creature had probably died and
started to degenerate inside the man’s body.
Shocked doctors consider that their patient was infected four years
ago in Australia. The man has made a full recovery after the worm was
removed during surgery.
Normally the worms live in the intestines and enter the body via
larvae in infected drinking water. They dig through flesh and set
themselves free through a blister on the skin. It can sit inside the
human body alive for years or die, degenerate, and then cause problems
in the area.
