Eight heavily armed Nigerian pirates were captured by
the Ghanian Navy on Saturday after they attempted to attack a Nigerian
cargo vessel, MT Mariam, on Saturday.
According to the Public Relations Officer of the 1 Garrison, Ghana Armed Forces, Lt Maxwell Asola, all the eight pirates are Nigerians.
The arrest was said to have taken place at about 10:30am after the owner of the MV Mariam vessel alerted the Ghanian authorities. He said the pirates told him by telephone that they wanted to use the vessel to carry out an attack and subsequently banged the phone on him after the conversation.
He however approached the Ghana navy for assistance and they swung into action leading to the arrest of the pirates.
The vessel docked in port yesterday.
It will be recalled that Nigeria’s main opposition party, All Progressives Congress (APC), recently took its campaign to Ghana to canvass for votes from Nigerians resident there.
Nigeriafilms.com reports that despite the arms in their possession,
the criminals were overpowered by the naval crew who were aboard GNS
BLIKA. Luckily for the nine-member crew aboard MT Mariam, none of them
was injured during the incident.
The pirates were apprehended after the owners of the hijacked ship
